Top 10 Winston Churchill Quotes
Mr Churchill has hundreds of quotations attributed to him some of which he actually said but I have tried to select a few of the less well known ones that I think resonate in today’s business world. Enjoy!
- A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.
- A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.
- Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.
- Criticism may not be agreeable, but it is necessary. It fulfils the same function as pain in the human body. It calls attention to an unhealthy state of things.
- Difficulties mastered are opportunities won.
- Never, never, never give up.
- However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results.
- I am an optimist. It does not seem too much use being anything else.
- It is no use saying, ‘We are doing our best.’ You have got to succeed in doing what is necessary.
- Let our advance worrying become advance thinking and planning.
He also said that uneducated men should read books of quotations which I disagree with: I think everybody should read them whether they are educated or not!

Business Development, Winston Churchill

/My favourites are “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give”.
And to all the bad salespeople who’ve tried to sell me stuff over the years (not Mr A, of course) there’s “A fanatic is one who can’t change his mind and won’t change the subject.”
Couldn’t agree more Barry. Funny how your last quote always brings sales people to mind isn’t it?
Great stuff Mike. I like the full version, take off from #6: “Never give in, never give in, never; never; never; never – in nothing, great or small, large or petty – never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense”
Did you know it was a speech he made quite late on in his life to the graduates of Harrow (his alma mater). After he said it he sat down. Got to be the shortest graduation speech in history. By the way my very, very favourite quote was made by your 30th president. Any ideas?
This one is for you Lou – a real doozey from Calvin Coolidge
“Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘Press On’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.”
Priceless!
Great perspective and so true.
